Reflections and Realities: A Conversation with Dr. Penney Sanders

About the Speaker:

Dr. K. Penney Sanders, PhD

Dr. K. Penney Sanders, PhD, is a long-time educator having served as a teacher, counselor, principal, and school turn-around coach. Additionally, she served as Kentucky’s first director of the Office of Education Accountability. While much of her career focus was on K-12 education, she has taught university courses in research design, public school finance, guardianship, and dissertation direction. She has authored/co-authored several articles on school reform and school finance. In 2023 she co-authored the book, The Last Journey: A Road Map for Ending-of-Days.

As part of life’s “Second Act,” with her relocation to Port Angeles, Washington, Dr. Sanders became a Certified Professional Guardian/Conservator creating her own business to serve as an elder advocate and guardian. She completed a Certificate in Gerontology from the University of Washington which added another dimension to her continuing work with older adults.

Dr. Sanders recently completed 9 years (3-terms) on the Certified Professional Guardian Board. During her three terms she served on the Education Committee, Applications Committee and served 4 years as Co-Chair of Standards of Practice.

In addition to her professional work as an Elder Advocate, Dr. Sanders was recently appointed as a Hospital Commissioner for Olympic Medical Center, a rural, sole provider facility in Port Angeles, WA. In that role she seeks to bring an Advocate’s perspective to patient care and hospital management.

Over the years in both Kentucky and Washington, Dr. Sanders has served on numerous community Boards and Committees (too many to list). Currently she serves on the Board for the Port Angeles Senior Center, The Walkling Foundation and the Port Angeles Kiwanis Foundation.
